Smoke

I woke up and thought I smelled smoke. Nothing fresh, no danger... just stale, secondhand smoke, like a memory. Like he could have just been there... coming in from having a cigarette. He would have been sitting on the bed, rubbing his hands, patting his pockets to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything outside on the wall. And he'd watch me sleep. I can sleep through anything. Even a kiss goodbye.

And I wake up, and I realize how long it's been. Since I've smelled smoke.
